We’re so glad you’re here.
Welcome to the 2023 Crime Victims Treatment Center (CVTC) Volunteer Legal Advocate Training. Saturday’s training has been designed to give volunteer advocates the most complete overview possible of the issues that may arise while working with survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in the NYPD precincts, including the Special Victims Division (SVD).
Our training curriculum is designed for emergency intervention. It is not purely an academic curriculum and will not focus on global or long-term issues. It will instead prepare you to be an effective advocate for survivors of sexual and domestic violence in NYPD precincts.
We will discuss the legal advocate role at length during training. You will learn about the legal challenges survivors face, methods to stay grounded, and how to effectively advocate for survivors at the precinct. The precincts offer a different atmosphere than what you’re accustomed to in the emergency department. We will cover the differences between ED advocacy and legal advocacy, what to expect at the precincts, and methods for interacting with police.
You are part of a unique cohort, as this is the inaugural class of volunteer legal advocates at CVTC. We’re so thankful for your commitment to going above and beyond in helping survivors. Please take advantage of this time before sessions begin to customize your profile, explore the app features and manual, and say hello to your fellow trainees by posting on the advocate wall.
